It is located near the confluence place of the Strypa river to Dnister. It is known since XIV century as Zahaipole. In 1570 the owner - duke Jakub Potots'kyi - has achieved the status of city and renamed it on the Zolotyi Potik ("Gold Stream").
About an origin of the name exists a folk legend. During long enemy attack defenders of fortress did not have water. In this moment in the fortress vault has been found the water. It has been proceeded outside a fortress.
The Magdeburg Right and "Pylava" emblem was given in 1540.
