ZHMERYNKA
It was founded in 1865 between Velyka and Mala (Large and Little) Zhmerynka villages on the place of the cut down oak wood in connection to construction of the railway Kyiv-Balta (1865-1870). About an origin of the name are different versions: one researchers consider, that it occurs from the Polish expression "I press a hand" ("zhmu ruku"), told at a meeting of two winners, others suppose that there was a settlement in which lived potters who produced different utensils - "zhaly rynky" (pressed the pots).
Historian Gerodot testifies, that Podillya land known since 5 centuries B.C. He recollects alzons and nevrs which occupied these lands. According to his works the south of Ukraine during those far times occupied Cimmerians which Assyrians named "GIM(M)IR". Probably, from here the name of our far ancestors also has gone.
