CHYHYRYN

The first written mention refers to the beginning of the XVI century. In those day it was a Cossacks settlement with a small fortress. The origin of the name comes from the name of the grasses that grow here ("chygyr"). In 1592 Chyhyryn got the Magdeburg Right and an emblem - three arrows as a symbol of defense from the Tartar and the Turks. The name of Bogdan (Zynovi) Khmelnitsky is connected with this town. Chyhyryn was a residence of the het’man, in fact it was the capital of Ukraine. From Kodak and other fortress cannons were moved guns, in the town was built fortress. They made swords, sabers and rifles there. Many schools were opened at churches and monasteries. Practically all people including women and children could read and write.
